TREATMENT OVERVIEW
Wrinkle Injections have become the most popular aesthetic procedure both in the UK and worldwide due to the anti-ageing results they produce. They are most commonly used to treat dynamic wrinkles in the upper third of the face, particularly the crows’ feet and frown lines which are often the first signs of the ageing process.
Wrinkle Injections work by temporarily ‘freezing’ the nerves that stimulate the muscles that are used when we make facial expressions. These muscles become weaker or inactive and, as a result, the overlying skin becomes smoother and lines and wrinkles gradually appear much softer.
Wrinkle Injections are a chemical produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. It is a protein derivative of the toxin, which, when injected into a muscle causes it to become weakened or inactivated. It stops the muscle from functioning by blocking neuromuscular transmission i.e. stops the chemical messages from the nerve to the muscle.
Wrinkle Injections have now been used safely for over 20 years for the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions, including one of its first medical uses, the treatment of eye muscle disorders or strabismus. It is now used for the treatment of excessive sweating, bladder problems, migraine and severe neck spasms, to just name a few.
In 1992, an ophthalmologist treating patients with severe eye spasms noticed that botulinum toxin was also smoothing the skin surrounding the eye and this sparked the usage of this product as an aesthetic treatment. Since then, Wrinkle Injections have undergone rigorous clinical testing and it is a very safe and highly effective procedure, targeting muscle movement that is causing our skin to become creased and lined as our collagen and elastin production slows down.
What happens during a Wrinkle Injection treatment?
The process takes about 10 to 15 minutes. First, we will ask you to make various expressions to observe who the facial muscles work. Then the product is injected into various points in the target area using an extremely fine needle.
Are there any side effects to Wrinkle Injections?
Immediately after your procedure there may be slight swelling and redness at the injection sites, but this will usually resolve itself in two to four hours.
More serious complications are rare, and this product has been well tested. Occasionally, you may experience a temporary drooping of the eyelid, but this is very rare and will usually resolve itself within a few weeks. In extremely rare cases, patients can develop an allergy to the treatment, or some patients may not respond to the treatment.
Are the results of a Wrinkle Injection treatment immediate?
Wrinkle Injections work by making the facial muscles weaker or inactive which causes the overlying skin to become smoother. This takes a while to take effect and you’ll see the full results between seven and 14 days.
How long will be Wrinkle Injections last?
Depending on the individual and the area treated, results of your Wrinkle Injections should last between three and four months before you require a top-up.
Will I look unnatural after Wrinkle Injections?
The aim of any anti-ageing procedure is to subtly refresh your appearance without making you look drastically different or it noticeably that you’ve had something done. Wrinkle Injections are technique dependent, so it is essential you choose an aesthetic practitioner who is skilled and experienced in creating a beautifully naturally rejuvenation that still allows you to be as expressive as normal.
