Scar Reduction Treatments Overview
The appropriate method of scar reduction treatment depends upon how it was caused in the first instance. Once a member of our team assesses your particular scar and circumstances, we will be able to help treat you accordingly with view to achieving the best possible results.
It is usually not possible to completely remove a surgical, traumatic or post-inflammatory scar. However, it may be possible to considerably reduce the appearance of the scar and the surrounding area. This may be a complex process or may be very simple depending upon the age of the scar, its position shape and size, as well as the cause of the scar.
At the first consultation you will be advised as to the recommended method of scar reduction treatment and the chances of getting a good result. You may be advised not to undergo scar reduction treatment, as not all scars can be reduced and improved.
We can use a number of different approaches to reduce or correct a scar and the appropriate method depends on the nature of the scar and where it is positioned. Also the expectations of the patient in terms of the end result must also be taken into account.
Scar reduction treatment could include the use of a fractional laser to resurface the overlying skin. Steroid injections can be used to treat keloid scarring. Sometimes, complete excision of the initial scar to produce a more aesthetic and less noticeable scar is the best option.
It is important that patients realise that is usually impossible to completely eradicate a scar, but their appearance can be greatly improved.
