Chemical Peels Overview
What are Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are cosmetic procedures that involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin. This solution helps remove the outer layers of the skin, revealing a smoother, more evenly pigmented, and glowing complexion.
At Wimpole Aesthetics, we specialise in AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) peels, which offer effective results with minimal downtime.
What is Involved in the Procedure of a Chemical Peel?
- The skin is cleansed to remove any oils or impurities.
- A carefully selected peeling agent, such as AHA or TCA, is applied to the skin.
- The peeling agent causes a warm sensation, like a sunburn, which subsides quickly with cool compresses.
- In some cases, there may be mild swelling around the eyes, but overall discomfort is minimal.
- Within a few days, the skin starts to shed, revealing a pink-coloured, smooth-textured layer.
- The shedding process lasts about five to seven days, and during this time, the skin undergoes significant rejuvenation.
What Chemicals are Used in Wimpole Aesthetics’ Peels?
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) are found in plants and food such as citrus fruits, apples, grapes, sugar cane and sour milk. The acid breaks the intracellular bonds of the epidermis and accelerates the sloughing of the superficial dead skin cells of the epidermis.
Lactic acid and glycolic acids are the two most common AHA acids found in skincare products. This peel is considered a light peel and patients will require multiple treatments to see results. This treatment can help with acne scars.
Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) can be used in many concentrations, but it is mostly used for medium-depth peeling. Fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems are commonly treated with TCA. The result of TCA peels produces more dramatic results than AHA peels. Clients may require more than one peel to achieve the desired results.
The Benefits of Chemical Peels
Chemical peels offer a range of benefits for your skin:
- Improved skin texture and tone
- Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
- Treatment of superficial blemishes and pigmentation issues
- Enhanced skin radiance and luminosity
With the right peel treatment, you can address various skin concerns and achieve a more youthful and revitalised appearance.
What to Expect During and After a Chemical Peel
- You may notice an immediate improvement in your skin’s appearance.
- Over the next 8 to 10 weeks, as your skin continues to heal and regenerate, you will experience the full effects of the peel.
- For optimal results, we recommend a series of two treatments, spaced four weeks apart.
- Maintenance treatments every 9 months to a year can help prolong and enhance the results.
- It’s important to follow the post-peel care instructions provided by your skincare professional to ensure optimal healing and maximise the results of the chemical peel.
With each treatment, you’ll witness a reduction in the signs of skin ageing, including fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and sun damage. Your skin will appear more youthful, radiant, and revitalised.

Are chemical peels safe?
Yes, when performed by a qualified skincare professional, chemical peels are considered safe. However, it’s important to disclose any medical conditions, allergies, or medications you are taking during your consultation. This information will help your skincare professional determine the most suitable peel for your skin type and minimise the risk of any adverse reactions. They will also provide detailed pre- and post-peel care instructions to ensure the safety and efficacy of the treatment.
What should I put on my face after a chemical peel?
After a chemical peel, it’s essential to follow the post-peel care instructions provided by your skincare professional. Typically, we will recommend gentle skincare products and moisturisers that are free from irritants, fragrances and harsh ingredients.
It’s important to keep the skin hydrated and protected with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Avoid using abrasive scrubs, exfoliants or harsh cleansers until the skin has fully healed. We may also suggest specific serums or creams to enhance the healing process and optimise the results of the peel.
How long does a chemical peel take?
The duration of a chemical peel can vary depending on the type and depth of the peel. Superficial peels usually take about 30 minutes to complete, while medium to deep peels may require longer sessions, typically up to 45 minutes. However, it is important to note that the overall time commitment includes pre-peel preparation and post-peel care instructions.
